in Perth

hello everyone

this is just a quick note to all of you, saying that I'm now finally in Perth.
I arrived!!!!
I'm living in Fremantle now, at the beach and the rivermouth of the Swan River.
It's beautiful here. Everyday in the morning when I ride my bike to work I see the ocean and it's nice and sunny.
I've always wanted to live somewhere close to the beach - somewhere where it's warm :)
and yes, you read that right: I'm actually working again!!!
Once I got to Fremantle, Perth I knew I needed to look for work.
First Headley and me had to unpack all our stuff and settle in and then I walked straight into Freo and left resumees everywhere and the same day I got a shop at the souvenir shop at the mall and a job behind the bar at the Newport Hotel.
So I'm working 2 jobs now and pretty happy with them.
Freo is a good place to live.
I didnt have my car anymore and I didnt have a bike or anything, so I did a lot of walking the first days, but then one morning we found a perfectly alright bike on the side of the street that someone had chucked out.
So Headley fixed it up a bit and now I have a perfectly good bike and it only takes me 10 min to work :)))
Christina is living really close to me too, so I get to catch up with her quite regularly which is great.

so as you can see, my friends, I'm doing alright!!!
I hope u are all well too.
Let me know how u are going.
I'll keep you posted
all my love
yours Laura/ Anneli

trip around Australia with Headley

hi all of you
my dear friends, its been so long, i know
many of you have asked what i m doing and where i m and why i never have time to write

well, i guess the last months were the time in my life that i have been on the internet the LEAST since i first started using it
the north of WA (western australia) is not very renowned for its good infrastructure
i had no phone coverage, there was no internet and if there was any, it was so slow and so expensive, it would have been cheaper and faster to write hand written letters and put them on a ship, then u might get it sometime next year.. :)

well, i have been back at the east coast where infrastructure is better, but it seems all of my travels lately have been a bit time limited
as i had to try and make it to Brisbane from the west before my sister got here and then make it back to Perth with Headley, my boyfriend, before I run out of money, which will be very soon
i need to work
and yeah, i guess another reason WAS Headley and they way we travelled, camping out in national parks all the time and then sitting near a river at a camp fire under a beautiful sky full of stars doesnt really make u wanna get the laptop out to write emails
just doesnt fit into the nature around u
technology somehow crashes with nature in that respect
and we have been moving fairly much
we did about 22 000 km in his car in the last 4 months or so
a lot of packing up, driving, exploring, finding a great spot, setting up the tent and camp, cooking, doing the dishes, lots of hikes and walks and swims and then packing up and driving again
it has been an absolutely amazing trip and i have come to the core of australian living out in the bush
with fishing and hunting, gutting, cleaning and butchering the meat to have something to eat, to 'live of the land' it has been a real eye opener in many respects and i have learnt so much
surviving skills out in the bush and practical every day skills

we have seen so much amazing wild life at our camp spots and on our walks
possums, echidnas, koalas, all kinds of birds and goannas, turkeys and everything roaming our camp grounds
really friendly creatures
saw lots of dolphins, whales, sting rays, turtles and eagles, dingos... name it, if it lives here there is a big chance, it crossed our way
but then we have been outside all the time as well
when we went to Melbourne to catch up with my friends there, we realized that this must have been the frist night in the last 4 months or so that we had been sleeping INSIDE, being in a HOUSE
otherwise we lived out of the car, cooked in the back on the gas cooker, we have a fridge in the car and all other stuff u can imagine (we even have dive gear and spear guns, fishing rods and GOLF CLUPS!!!)
most of the time in the remote areas like up in the north of WA where there were no mozzies and no people around, we just chucked the swag (u know, those aussie sleeping bags that are made of canvas with a matress and everything inside) on the roof of the car and slept there underneath the stars
absolutely amazing!!!!
a bit cold sometimes and when it was windy, i was afraid it might blow us off the roof of the car
but we survived, so all good :)))

i dont wanna bore u with too much detail
there are again lots of new photos on my msn space
since the croc trip i uploaded a view folders
- restoration island is the island, where i was last year for 6 weeks and i went back for a visit after the croc trip, since i was really close by
- in cairns i did a bit of more sightseeing
- back in perth i fixed my car and got it ready for the drive up north
- then in carnarvon (900 km north of Perth on the west coast) i looked for work and stayed on a farm until i found paid work
- which i did: on a prawn trawler -> guys, i tell u, i have unlimited stories from that trip.. the next time i get to catch up with u in person, u have to ask me about it.. there are some real goodies... it was hell... now i m happy it is over and i have some really good stories, but while it lasted, i wished i was dead instead.. but i didnt die, so i guess it only made me stronger and harder, which is good :) .. i must say, i m kinda proud to have survived that!!!
- then from there i went for the weekend to a surf spot just an hours drive north of Carnarvon (red bluff)  with the other dekkies (deckhands on the boats, the same job I did on the boat).. we needed that to relax after the mental and physical straighning work
- Headley picked me up in carnarvon after that and we started travelling together, first went to Karijini national park
- then did more of the Pilbara (thats the area around Carnarvon, from there inland and up to the coast and back along the coast past the Ningaloo reef, which is like the great barrier reef, just not as famous, but u can access it straight from the beach... like diving/ snorkeling in an aquarium!!!)
- from there we drove both cars (cause i still had my little laser) to Broome, left the laser in the car park and first spend quiet a bit time ON cable beach, the 25 km long white sand beach at Broome... we justed camped on the beach and there were never any people.. it was just magic.. absolutely unreal!
- did in Headley's car a bit of the Kimberleys (thats the area between Broome and Darwin) and came back to Broome
- i had to say bye and drove from Broome to Darwin with two other backpackers, an Israeli guy named Shai and a dutch girl called Kasha
- in Darwin i met up with another friend from up at restoration island
- then plans changed and i left the laser in Darwin (due to several reasons but with a broken heart, cause it had been a real good friend!), Headley came to pick me up, cause he had decided to come all around australia with me... so we did.. we went thru the top end, crossed the boarder into queensland and made it thru outback queensland to brisbane
- where my sister tiina arrived end of august and we had a wonderful month of travelling around together.. went to fraser island and her visit ended with the two of us going to sydney
- i went back up to Brisbane and from there Headley and me started wandering slowly down south, going thru Sydney, Canberra (now i have been to all states in australia and its capital!), but mainly staying inland as the coast there is really commercial (surfers paradies, the gold coast and so on) and explored some real good national parks.. we climbed australia's highest mountain (2228 m) and from there to Melbourne and Bendigo to visit my aussie family (the Scotts)

well, i guess it was really hard to keep the last 6 months "really short" as you know i m not very good at keeping things "short" anyway
but maybe, now u havent had any news from me for so long, maybe u'll be interested and have the time

I send all of you all my love
hope your life is going alright and you are enjoying it
what have u been up to and have you had any big changes in life?
are u married? have kids? built a house? moved? new job?
new boyfriend? new pet? have been travelling somewhere?
catching up with people I know?

if so, i'd love to hear about it!!!
so for now, take care
take all these hugs and kisses that i m sending u
and keep up the spirit!!

love and peace
always
yours Laura
(hey, remember when i always used to sign with all my different nick names that people used to know me under? i got a new one: everyone here now knows me as Anneli, which really IS my second name.. so there u go, another one for the list!! lol)

Cairns, Cape York

hi there

how is it going? whats news over there?

I'm back in cairns
had a great time up on the island again
just magic
thats my little paradise up there

i got a lift up north on the mothership, the barge that supplies the boats
and people up there
we left cairns on a wednesday (30th of april) and i had a great time on that
boat
the crew was really nice (and very well behaved, as there was a female on
boat :) that always has a big effect) and i loved being on a boat again,
watching the sea, sunsets and sunrises
i got to Portland Roads saturday morning and Resto-Dave got me with his boat
we went back to the island and the makrel fishing boat from last year, the
wildcard, was there, so i got to catch up with old friends
we went for a walk along the beach and had a nice dinner together that night
one of the teachers from Lockhart was there as well and i had to answer
10000 questions about the archer river trip, cause he wants to do the same
trip next year maybe ;)

there was an australian wwoofer couple on the island
they were from Victoria

Dave's brother Mick was on the island as well
he is an artist and spend most of the day down at the beach painting
he was an interesting man, has done some different stuff in his life, had
quite a few stories to tell

well, Mick, Kelly and Luke left the island last week tuesday
we went into Lockhart, had a look around, visited all the people i got to
know last year
it was funny walking around the place and stopping here and there for a chat
like a local :D

my friend Albie from last year came back from fishing that day and we went
up to Wattle hills on the pascoe river to see some of our friends there
spend a few days up there, going swimming in the river, playing cards and
enjoying the bush life
it was so great to see all of them again and hard to say bye after just a
few days again

i finally did manage to get to Chilli Beach, which is just on the opposite
side of the island on the main land
thats where all the tourists go camping, its national park
we went there for Albie's birthday and it really is the most amazing place
many km of just white beach and coconut palm trees all along the way
tropical paradise
thats where the hippies used to live when they first came up there
thats where Albie grew up
he had lots of stories to tell about the place and spots to show us
painted a really lively picture in my head about what it must have been like
20 years ago with about 100 ppl living there in little sheds, having there
veggies growing and living in little sheds tugged behind the rainforest
right at the beach

some tourists from Brisbane or somewhere came up to us and found out that
Albie was a local
so they started asking him all those questions
it was funny to realize how lucky i am to experience this whole place in a
way not a lot of people are able to
cause there is way more to it then just camping at Chilli beach
the way i expierenced the whole place i got such an insight into how the
'ferals' (as they get called or sometimes even call themselves) live and
what life is like up there and so much about the history of that place and i
got to know some real characters

well, i also got to know a lot of stuff that i probably really didnt wanna
know, cause the outside paradise up there still has a deeper level of lots
of bad and wrong things going on
the human side to the beautiful natural paradise

anyway, on monday i managed to get a lift back down south to Cairns from the
island on a government research boat, a trawler with 2 girls and 3 guys on
it
i had nearly given up my hope of finding a free lift back down south and was
prepared to have to pay the airfare, but there were no local airfares
avalable, so i would have had to pay 350 dollars from Lockhart to Cairns
thats ridiculous, considering that i m only paying 210,- from Cairns all the
way back to Perth

So yesterday morning we arrived at the port and I'm back here at Dave
Nissen's brothers place who was on the archer river trip with us
Dave also came up from Mission Beach to see me again and we are gonna go to
Port Douglas today for a trip
tomorrow morning i m flying back to Perth via Sydney and will be there for
the weekend, get my car and leave as soon as possible, as i have been
talking to my friends there and they all told me that i will be in for a
shock coming from the tropics
and i dont wanna hang around the south and the cold anyway
bugger that :P

alright, enough news again from me
hope u are all well and i hope to hear from u soon again
and i ll go and enjoy the heat and the sun outside
sorry, didnt wanna make u jealous (well, no, really i did...heheh)

take care everyone
love u
yours Laura

my trip from Melbourne to Perth

hello everybody

how are you?
greetings from Western Australia (WA), Perth
i'm here at Christina's place, the girl who lived in Plutolaan in the Netherlands in the same room as me but a year later
i met her, when i went back to visit Groningen in Oct when i lived in Maastricht
and now, 2 and something years later we meet up again in Perth (after shortly seeing her as well in Maastricht!)
so funny
and she is just my oasis after the 5 weeks of camping and moving lots, it is so good to be in someone's home and she is such great company
i enjoy my time here

well, about my trip:
I did leave Melbourne with Mat on that friday the 29th of feb
it was raining and cold and it was really time to leave melbourne apparently
we headed down the great ocean road (again.. heheh) to cape otway, where we camped the first night at blanket bay
really nice spot and we met some fishermen there and a few backpackers (belgium and swiss girls) and sat around the fire all night
they had a guitar and i played a bit after a long time of not playing
it was really great
guitars just go so well with camp fires :P

we saw the 12 apostels again, but did quite a lot of stuff west of that, that i hadnt seen yet, so that was actually pretty cool
we stayed the night in Glenelg NP at a river, really beautiful camp spot and met some other people there
always good conversations and sharing the fire
it was really cold though at night, i was freezing
thanks for your sleeping bag, Marie, I used it additionally to my other 2 :D lol

then we crossed the border to South Australia (SA) and finally i was in new territory
i hadnt been down the south coast of SA yet
so we went to Mt gambier and saw the magnificent blue lake (which is just really incredibly blue!!!!) and a few sink holes around that area, that used to be caves and collapsed

from there we went to our first wwoofing farm, Pete's fish farm
it was a really nice place with friendly people
they operated as a hostel as well for backpackers who worked in the orchards around picking fruit
so it was a busy place with some french canadians, german, taiwanese and japanese
learned a bit about taiwan, its history and so on, which was really interesting
so ignorant of us in europe to neglect all that part of the world so much at school, where we are learning 30000 times about the 2nd world war and stuff but only all the things happening over in europe
well, anyway, we did a lot of catching fish, gutting them, washing them and hanging them in the smoker and after we left we knew quite a bit more about fish than we did before
as a present we got 2 smoked fish to take with us and had the best camping meal that night
like kings :P
we continued cause we realized that we still had SUCH A LONG WAY TO GO (look at the map and u will see that even melbourne to adelaide is not very far compared to all the way we had to go to perth - and we werent even in adelaide yet)
camped at the Granites which was a beautiful spot right at the beach and sat at the dunes at night to watch the sunset and i went for a run in the morning on the beach and then a swim, and it was as if i was the first person to ever set foot on that beach
it just felt so new, so untouched, just incredible

then we got to Adelaide and all the accomodation was booked as there were about 7 festivals on at the same time
well, SA, the festival state, thats what it says on their number plates as well - now i know why...
we got a site in a caravan park outside of perth in the adelaide hills in a german village, called Hahndorf
really everything there was just so german, it was really funny
went to some of the wineries there and then into the city
the coolest thing about adelaide that i remember was the light constellations they had at north terrace, where they were shining all these different colours and patterns on these old buildings and lots of people came to watch
it was definitely something different
had never seen anything like it before
another funny thing about adelaide was that we ran into the same people all the time
i mean, adelaide is big, there about 1 million people living there, but we kept on meeting the same people all over the place in different spots all over town
how weird and random???

after adelaide we were on our way to port augusta and stopped at port germein and port pieri and went for a swim
port germein has the longest wooden jetty in whole australia, about 1,6 km long
it was fantastic out there
we camped near the road, which was not that great as trucks went past all night and even the train went by, so we heard all those noises, but it was difficult to sleep anyway, cause it was so HOT
we went thru the wwoof book and decided on which places we wanted to go to

the drive down Eyre peninsula to Port lincoln was just incredible HOT HOT HOT
it must have been like 50 degrees in the car, the water in our bottles was boiling, but we jsut forced ourselves to drink to not dehydrate
but it was difficult
we went for a swim, but were sweating just right away again
once we got to the campground at lincoln national park where Dean and Shamaya (i travelled with them thru the desserts last year down from alice springs back to victoria) were already waiting for us, i was about to die
but that places was just magic
we stayed in lincoln np 4 nights, so we had some time to relax and finally BE in one place again for a change, cause we were moving so much, we never got to really BE anywhere really
and it was great catching up with dean and shamaya as well
we went swimming a lot and did a bit of body boarding, sat around and talked and did a whole lot of nothing, which just felt awesome
tuesday we went for a run to coffin bay np and a bit around lincoln as well, saw huge sand dunes that shamaya and me climbed up and down until he lost one of his thongs and got bogged in really deep sand so we had to let the tyres down and pump them up after wards again
a REAL adventure
some serious 4 wheel driving!!!!!

it was hard to say bye on thursday, but it was time to move on
that drive up to Ceduna was probably the worst day of driving of the whole trip
it had about 40 degrees, a hot north wind was blowing and we went to visit the thalia caves at the sea that someone had told us about
8 km down a dirt road and when we got there we just thought we were in the middle of the dessert
the heat and the sand, the hot wind... it is hard to explain what it is like
for sure really unpleasant and u can imagine that people die in that heat
it is like a fist comes down from the sky and smashes u to the ground
it was nearly unbearable
we made it up to Streaky bay where we swam in a shark cage they had at the jetty and went to a little museum where they had a replica of the biggest white shark they had caught in the waters just in front of streaky bay
u dont wanna meet that shark out there in the water, i m serious!!!!
it made it appearently into the book of record
just massive!!!

we spent the night at Laura bay conservation park, which we really only had to see because of the name and then it turned out to be the worst camp spot ever, cause there were so many flies as long as it was still sunlight (they were crawling into ur nose, ears, mouth, just EVERYWHERE) and once it got dark there were so many mosquitos, it was just crazy
speaking of which, late at night there were some crazy young people coming out there from town, drunk, and doing their burnies there, so freaked us out a bit, but after a few they luckily just left us in all the dust they had stirred up and that was it

from Ceduna all the way to Norseman in WA crossing the border is what they call the 'nullarbor' (latin for 'no trees')
it includes australia's longest straight road (146km without a bend)
and goes thru really dry and desserty kinda country
it was 2 solid days of driving, about 700 km's on that first day
the cliffs around there are amazing and we stopped at a couple of lookouts, but other than that we were just driving
we crossed the border and got into a weird kinda in between time zone, between SA time and WA time, so at all the road houses and petrol stations and other little stops where there were shops they always had 3 clocks with the different times
very confusing
i bought a sticker for the laser saying 'i crossed the nullarbor', which has paid off already, as lots of tourist had a look at it near Albany later on and couldnt believe that that car made it across the nullarbor (the laser was the biggest attraction in that national park.. hahahah)

all the 'towns' along the nullarbor were really only road houses with about 3 to max 10 people living there
it was fascinating
really different

then something really funny happened
i had tried to get in touch with 2 friends of mine, Michael and Sharon, who i worked with at gemtree, the caravan park in the outback, when i was near adelaide, cause that's where they live
but it happened that i drove into that little roadhouse on the second day in the morning and walked into the shop and there they were, looking after that roadhouse and working there.. they had no reception, so i couldnt call them
australia is such a small place
not in respect of size of country, no, not at all.. thats one thing i learned (again) from this drive
but in respect of running into people
you always meet people everywhere - and even ones that you KNOW!!!
so i had a good chat with them and then we continued with new certificates that we got from them, saying we crossed the nullarbor :)

once we got to Norseman the country changed a lot and it wasnt as dry anymore
we found a great spot for the night near a dry salt lake where there was nobody else and just SLEPT
the next day we arrived in Esperance, which i had heard a lot about before and it was just like coming to paradise
especially after the dessert of the nullarbor
we had a look around esperance and then went out to cape le grand national park
which was just amazing
voted australia's most beautiful beaches around there we ended up in Lucky bay camping for 2 nights
lots of islands just off the shore and some nice people around there
we met Paul and Mary, had a few beers and nice chats and the next day I climbed Frenchman's peak with Paul
the views from there were breath taking
I liked Paul's comment on the view: 'why would anyone wanna have a TV (no matter how many inches), if you can have this?'
we went for a swim and another walk in the afternoon and another swim
as you can tell, life is really hard :P

from esperance we headed further west to Albany, camped the night just 20 km before Albany at Norman's beach, a camp spot tucked away under paper barks on a river inlet - magic!!!
in the morning i went for another run on the beach and had a bath in the river
we spent the day in Albany, going to the big wind farm there, had some squid in the marina and went down to the np just south to see the gap and the natural bridge, rock formations on the coast

that night we slept in a bed again :) so good!!!!
we arrived in Denmark in the afternoon at the Mia Mia co opperative housing community
Basil and Nikki were our hosts on that wwoof farm for the next week
we did some weeding at the center for sustainable living, went to the wetland educational center they had there and cleared the forest from debry
easter was a great time to be in denmark and be part of that vibrant community
so much was on
an arts exhibition of an east timorese artist, Maria Madeira, who was present at the opening and told lots of stories to her paintings
i never learned so much about a country in such a short time!!!!

parts of the brave new works art festival were also a songwriter's evening, the opening at the visitor center with wine tasting and food tastings and bands playing
easter sunday we had off, went for a walk around the wetlands and then Mat and me got the bikes and went for a bike ride at the wilson's inlet
it was so interesting staying at Basil's and Nikki's place cause on friday we got to be part of a shabbat shalom friday evening celebrations as they were jewish (my apologies to everyone jewish, if i spelled that wrong.. i still dont know much/ enough about Judaism... but i m learning!)

tuesday we moved on from Denmark to Walpole, just about 60 km further west but a bit more inland
thats where the Valley of the Giants is, the biggest trees and such an ancient forest
we went to one last wwoofing farm there
the Deep River Ecological Community was our home for another few days
Mike & Penney were great hosts, they were spoiling us :)
we stayed in a railway carriage that was nicely made up and really cosy
deep end was also home to 5 pet kangaroos that we used to bottle feed in the mornings and evenings
after work we went to do the tree top walk in the valley of the giants and saw some massive tingle trees and karri trees, beautiful old really big trees that had a real mystic feeling about them
the next day Mike took us for a walk around their shared property
it was a 3 (!!) hour hike thru all different kinds of bush and past a few old houses where the hippies who first came to the property used to live
it was like a journey thru space and time
and Mike just knew everything about everything (well, he is the president of the historical society)
one of the stories he told us:
apparently rednecks from walpole used to drive past the community back in the days when they lost their jobs because they stopped all he logging and they shut down the mills and they used to shoot into the property
how crazy? people can be so awful...

anyway, we learned a lot about the local history and Mike took us on a 4WD trip thru the nearby forest and down to the beach for some fishing and to see the sunset
they were just the best hosts!!!

from Walpole we didnt have far to go to Perth anymore
we went inland thru Pemberton, where we climbed the highest tree top lookout in the world on the Biencenntial tree
that was up on 75 m height, climbing pegs around and around higher and higher.. it was pretty scary!!! and the cabin up in the top of the tree was moving... even I'm not scared of heights that WAS pretty close to scaring me, no serioulsy: I totally freaked out, but i still made it to the top
:)

we went bushwalking around that area and did some pretty good, long walks
good exercise!!
once we got lost and couldnt find our way back anymore
so we were looking for our footprints until we finally managed to find them and find back to the track
getting lost is always fun...

it started raining when we were in a town called Manjimup (lots of places around that whole south-west area end with '-up' (Nannup, Yallingup, Kudardup, Gnarabup, Wilyabrup,...)
it is aboriginal for 'place'

it rained for a solid 24 hours which is not nice when you are camping
luckily we met some very friendly people, Tom & Therese, at our campspot in Alexandra bridge... they invited us to sit under their tab, so we didnt get wet
and then they even cooked up a nice meal and invited us to eat with them
so instead of having a real miserable evening sitting in the car and waiting for it to get dark, so we could go to sleep in the not water proof tent, we had a lovely evening and a good feed (well, the curry we had was really hot and i m not the best person handling hot food, but i just couldnt refuse it, even i was crying, my eyes/nose everything was running and my mouth burning..)

In Augusta we met Paul again who spent the next few days travelling with us
we went to see the lighthouse at Cape Leeuwin, where the Indian and the southern ocean meet
we took the next 4 days to explore the whole area between the two capes, Cape Leeuwin and Cape Naturalist
there are all these beautiful beaches, great forest, lots of caves underground and the town of margaret river
we went to 2 of the caves and had our own little adventure exploring them, as it was a self guided cave, so we only got helmets and torches and off we went
it was amazing and we really took our time and saw all kinds of really interesting stuff
Giants caves were so exciting, we had to crawl thru little openings between the rocks, clim ladders and so on
real good value!!!!

friday after having had jaffles (=sandwiches u put in an iron and heat them over fire... just soooo yummy!!!!) for lunch, we said bye to paul and headed further north
we camped north of Bunbury, only about 2 hours from Perth
it started raining again, so we stopped all our sightseeing and went straight to perth
i dropped Mat in Rockingham, just a bit south of Perth, where i also met Mick, a friend of mine who i met in gemtree a year ago
i continued to perth and arrived at Christina's place saturday afternoon
you simply CANNOT imagine how good the hot shower felt after such a long time (you dont wanna know how long we were going without a shower!!!)

now my time here is over already again
we had a great time together, got to know each other much better and might even travel up north together for a bit once i get back from cape york in far north queensland where i am heading now
i ll fly out of perth on thurday, Dave is gonna pick me up in Carins friday and then we will drive up the cape to Archer River (Cape York Peninsula is the area where i stayed last year up on that little tropical island near the aboriginal community and so on, u remember?)
from there we will take a boat down the archer river, do some fishing and hunting and adventuring around and make our way down to the sea and then up along the coast to weipa
the whole trip is gonna last about 2 weeks and we will camp along the way, next to the crocodile rivers (thinking about it I must admit I'm getting a bit scared, but as Dave used to be a crocodile hunter back in the days I feel kinda quite secure... just hoping no croc will come and get me out of my tent... *fingers crossed*)

well, yeah, these are my last adventures and my new plans
the time in perth was way too short
i did have a look around freemantle for a little bit, went to an asian food festival with indian music and stuff (very interesting!!!) and monday Sandy (the sea kayaker lady who we rescued from a croc up on the island last year) took me for a trip with a double seated sea kayak to penguin and seal island just off the coast
really amazing trip
yesterday i just ran around town getting stuff done and today packing and finally finishing this monster of an email
i dont know if anybody is gonna be able to read this
if you managed to make it to the end, as always: my respect!!! :) lol

i think about all of you a lot
sorry i havent written for a long time

there are new photos here as well
i wasnt able to upload all of them yet (unfortunately) but there are some to have a look at from the first weeks of the melbourne to perth trip
enjoy them!

all right, send u all my love and hope u are all good
take care, enjoy life and try to be good, if you can't, be safe :P

love ya
big hugs and kisses
yours Laura

PS: when up in far north queensland i wont have reception with my phone and no access to the internet for a while
but i cant wait to come back and read your replies
miss ya!!!!!

February 26

trip thru VIC with Marie

hello hello everyone
how are u? whats up with u guys?
a little update on what i have been doing...

the week I spent in Bendigo was great... mostly relaxing but I did also go for a fly in a little airplane (see photos!) with Scott and Lachie... Scott just got his pilot license and we were flying for an hour above Bendigo... it was so cool, I was totally excited...
after relaxing at Mac's and Scott's (which is always just wonderful, the bush really recharges your batteries...) and went back down to Melbourne and we had some rainy days there, not really summer at all
Marie, my french friend, who I met up in Cairns last year, came to Melbourne from WA and Prue and me showed her around Melbourne a couple of days (I saw quite a lot of stuff i hadnt seen yet as well and heard some really interesting stuff... Prue is an excelllent tour guide!!!).. there was so much on on these days, so we just had to spend a bit of time here... there was the st. kilda festival (lots of good music, especially Ladi 6, a female MC from NZ.. she was just amazing!!!!) and then also chinese new years... the year of the rat.. it was interesting once again to see all the dragon dances and the fire crackers and stuff... really loud!!!!
we left Melbourne with the little Laser all packed up (it is fixed up, has new tyres and is running like a new car.. i decided to take it all around australia.. i trust this little car, it wont let me down!!!) and headed north as the weather wasnt too good down south
we spend some great days up at the Murray River, Australia's largest river, camping in the bush (mainly Hattah national park), lying on the sandy beach, swimming in the really nice and warm water and just enjoying life
after that we went to the Grampians... it was good to be in the mountains again and Marie was all happy to see mountains again after a long time in really flat parts of australia
we went for a big hike (16 kms) on one day, up the Pinnacles
and the next day we went horse riding
hadnt done that for ages
it was good fun, our muscles were quite sore, but it was really worth it
after the ride we found a beautiful swimming spot at a waterfall near Zumstein in the Grampians
we really needed to wash ourselves, cause as we were bush camping all the time, we never had a shower or other luxury
and we were sweating and filthy, just really needed a wash
but we were really lucky all the time finding all these magic beautiful spots, which we didnt have to share with anyone
we always had them all to ourselves
i guess thats one of the best things and the least granted when coming from Europe
:)
after the Grampians we headed back down south to the coast and hit the great ocean road
i have been there now a couple of times (with my parents, with Claire and Rachel, the british girls I met in dec a year ago when i first got to Oz) but its still always good
and we did all different things, there were still heaps of places that i hadnt been to yet
probably the most romantic thing was having a dinner picknick at the 12 apostels for sunset
wow, and it was just after valentin's day ;) hehehe, Marie and me really have been to some amazing places
we already decided that we're gonna take our 'maybe husbands' there one day
:D hahaha

yeah, after bush walking, hiking, swimming, horse riding and all that other stuff, we decided that we were gonna try some surfing
we met Tom, who i met last year on my way to australia in singapore at the airport
he has a holiday house down at the beach
and thats where we crashed for a couple of nights
and no night too soon, as it started raining exactly that night!!!!
we were so happy to have a hot shower again and especially not being out there camping in the rain was so good
we had the perfect timing and great weather for all the other nights
not a drop of rain
then the last 2 days of our trip we spend in the rain
but it didnt worry us the slightest bit, as we were so wet anyway, being in the water giving surfing a try
it was good fun
got to stand up a bit and just really got into it
cant wait to do it again

so that was the crazy VIC trip
Marie left saturday morning and I met Mattias, a swedish backpacker, who i m going to go across to Perth in my little laser
so i m stoked to do that
cant wait
we are leaving friday
i m in bendigo right now, just to say bye to Mac and Scott
i went to Eaglehawk north primary school today and spend a day with the kids there
it was really great to be in school environment again

Prue came up here today and we just had dinner
i m so full
gotta send this to you now and finish
you ll hear from me the next time from the other end of australia probably (from Perth)
so take care until then
love you all

ooh, yeah, and if you check the photos you will see that my hair colour changed again
first it was kinda middle brown and now it actually changed already again (didnt put the newest photos on yet.. soon!)
it is really dark brown now :D hehehehe
well, i m tanned now anyway after those weeks of outdoor activities, so it is definitely not too harsh :P

alright, enough now
you all take care
and please forgive if it takes me long to get back to you on emails
i hardly ever get to the internet and i wont much for the next 3 - 4 weeks...
i still love each email that i receive
dont forget me

always yours
Laura

Australia

hi there

alright, back in Oz
its good to be back, catch up with friends, summer, sun and nice weather
and soon my friend Marie is coming here and i m gonna go down to the beach with her
cant wait
but first about my trip to oz
spain was great and i loved being there
unfortunately i had to spend my last day there in bed, as i m just not used enough to drinking too much and my hangover was killing me
: )
frankfurt was nice and i must say that i was really surprised, as all Germans have been telling me that it is a quite ugly town with skyscrapers and lots of industry
but i found it actually quite pretty
also because i didnt have any expectations, thats probably one reason too
i met Frank, who i know from Plutolaan and he showed me around town which was really nice
nothing compares to a local showing you around :P

then my long flight from frankfurt via Doha, Qatar to Singapore
everything was fine except of my chair being broken, so i wasnt able to lean back
and for a bit of the trip even my screen not working, so i couldnt watch movies
that was worse
anyway, arriving in Singapore with 35 degrees and high humidity
wow, that was different to 3 degrees in frankfurt :D
i made my way to a nice hostel, but couldnt do anything but lie around in bed, talk to other backpackers coming and going
went to have something to eat and then allowed myself to go to sleep, around 7 pm
had a real good night of sleep, but unfortunately the next night wasnt that easy
woke up at 3 am, and not able to go back to sleep anymore
it didnt help either that it was FREEZING in the dorm, as the airconditioning seemed to cool down the room to around 19 degrees
while it was bably 28 outside and we only had a tiny little blanket
but my sightseeing day in Singapore was good
driving around in a bus, meeting Jack Han, a Chinese Singaporian, who was retired and didnt have anything to do, so thought he'd show me around a bit
took me to chinatown and the temple there and in the end for a Tiger beer (from Singapore) to a airconditioned hotel lobby
that was again a very random thing to happen, but awesome!!!
my last day (or what was left of it, as i had to be at the airport around 4 pm) was kinda slow
the botanical gardens were a highlight, but other than that i must admit i cant even remember
i WAS really tired
next part of the trip, going with tiger airlines from singapore via darwin to melbourne was definetely not my most favourite part of the journey
there was no food or drinks (except of expensive ones you could buy) on offer and no TV, nothing
fortunately i met a really nice girl from Tassie, Amy, so we chatted the night away and time was acutally going quite fast
customs in darwin was real easy, they are much more laid back than in Melbourne
so no dramas because i have no return ticket or anything
arriving in melbourne the next morning after yet another night without real sleep
meeting Prue & Drew (thats where i m staying at the moment) and later also Lachie
going out for dinner and beers to the pub
next day going for a bike ride along the Yarra river and seeing a huge snake
that was cool
dying my hair afterwards with Prue, so its dark, brown now
;) hehehe, change again

anyway, australia day was on the 26th, so just made it back for a great holiday
had a BBQ and beers at Damo's and Pearcey's place and a really good day
so good to see everyone again
sunday we went to play barefoot lawn balls
well, now i have tried that as well... lol
and afterwards to St. Kilda for the U.N.K.L.E. concert
which was wicked!!!!

and well, here i m now
going to Bendigo tonight to catch up with Mac & Scott

thats my news, my friends
hope u are all well

big hug and many kisses
love, yours Laura/ Loz

Spain, Alicante & Madrid

hello my friends

greetings from Spain, Alicante, where my sister is doing her erasmus (exchange program) at the moment
and while being in europe i had to come and visit her of course

my months back in europe have been pretty good
quite busy with meeting friends, working and then packing again
but really nice!!!
i finally did put the photos of my last month in australia, my trip to finland and of my time in vienna online
there are also already some photos of spain
so if you have time, have a look

here in spain the weather is finally nicer and warmer than in middle europe
i couldnt wait to get back to australia, because of being fed up with winter
but its fine here too, so no hurry... it has been a pretty cold and really winterly winter.. with heaps of snow, which is not that common in vienna
the south of spain is like spring.. my sister lives right next to the beach and Alicante is a student city, so going out has been good fun
for the weekend we went to Madrid to meet up with some of MY erasmus friends from Groningen
it was great to catch up and I did see a bit more of Madrid this time again
I still have a couple of days here, before I will go to Germany, Frankfurt, see another friend from Groningen there too and then fly to Singapore
I'll have 2 days in Sinapore and then on the 24th of jan I will be back in Melbourne.. looking forward to that, all my friends in OZ!!!! cant wait to see you all again...
I'll get in touch with you, once I m back at my australian phone

so to all of you, enjoy yourself, you will hear from me when I m back down under... i hope you are all well, a happy new year to all of you again and i hope to hear from you soon!!!
btw my austrian phone is not in use anymore.. from the 24th of jan on I will use my australian phone again, so same number as last year +61423367534

take care, all of you
big kiss, lots of love
yours Laura, Laurita, Loz
